The United States 1980 Olympic ice hockey victory over the Soviet Union. The New York Jets defeating the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III. Villanova topping Georgetown to win the 1985 NCAA Championship. These are just a few of the biggest upsets in sports history. In each one of these cases the underdog was challenged by a much highly ranked team and each underdog rose to the challenge. In these instances it is reasonable to see why someone would root for these underdogs though. I'm sure every U.S. citizen, even those who knew absolutely nothing about hockey, was a fan of that 1980 Olympic gold medal team when the puck dropped that cold February day in Lake Placid. Same goes for the people who call New York home when Joe Namath guaranteed a victory in the first game to officially carry the "Super Bowl" title and for every Villanova alumni that watched their No. 8 seed shoot an astonishing 78.6 percent for the game to shock the top-seeded Hoyas and end Georgetown's hopes of a repeat.
