Is there a place for direct democracy in the contemporary political world? Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Direct Democracy is a political system in which policy decisions are made by the electorate itself and not by elected officials. This particular model of democracy has been known to have been in use since as early as the 5th Century BC in Athenian Democracy and is still widely used today in all parts of the world. Throughout the course of this essay I will examine whether or not there is a place for this system of democracy in the contemporary political world we live in. As stated above the roots of the direct democracy system originated in Ancient Greece. The Athenian system was a direct in the sense that it required the direct and continuous participation of all the citizens in the life of their polis or city-state. The form of government used by the Greeks was mass meetings; the Ecclesia was the popular assembly which consisted of all male citizens over the age of 18 who wished to participate, instead of elected officials. This meant that all classes of people were eligible to attend these meetings, vote and even hold office if chosen to by lot. The great thing about this mod......
