Since the enlightenment of the eighteenth century liberalism has been becoming a more and more prominent political and ideological outlook on the world. Liberals views on social equality, their strong commitment to assist the underprivileged and their avocation of individual liberties have all contributed to liberalism being one of, if not the most popular ideology in today's world. However liberalisms greatest strengths can also be seen as its greatest weaknesses. Liberals lack of a solid social stance and direction, their hesitance to recognise individual excellence and their opposition of violence all bring liberalism under a great deal of criticism from conservatives, federalists, collectivists and even other liberals. Liberal ideologies began to surface in number during the enlightenment of the eighteenth century.
