Growth and development occurs throughout life. Potter & Perry (2009) define adulthood to be a period of challenges, rewards and crisis. "Each person's developmental process however is a unique process" (Potter and Perry, 2009, p.207). This essay will examine the developmental patterns of growth that occur between the ages of 30 to 40. Developmental changes that occur at this age will be described and discussed; these changes will include both physical and cognitive changes, as well as social, and work and career changes. The effects marriage and divorce has on individuals in this age group will also be defined and discussed. Erik Erikson's views and theories on middle adulthood growth and developmental changes will be identified along with other author's ideas and views on this area.
