On the day of her daughter's birth, Charlayne Hunter-Gault's mother had no idea what great impact her child would one day have in the world. It was partly due to Charlayne's bravery that black Americans have the freedom to go to the college of their choice to achieve a greater education. Charlayne's success and the freedom that came along with her success did not come easily. On her quest for a better education, Charlayne and her family had to overcome many hardships and abuses both physical and emotional. In the end, Charlayne proudly became the first black woman to attend and graduate from the University of Georgia. Charlayne Hunter-Gault grew up in a loving African American family from a small town in South Carolina, Due West. Her family raised her to be proud of who she is and her family's background. As she gets older, Charlayne's mother, Althea, tells her more about her family history which helps Charlayne form and discover who she really is.
