In the Elizabethan Age, William Shakespeare was well-renowned for his many plays. He wrote different genres of plays from comedy, to drama, to romance. There were critics in Shakespeare's day in time that would have a lot to say about his pieces. Some argued that he never wrote anything original, while others praised him for his excellence. One aspect of Shakespeare's work, however, that is controversial even still in the twenty-first century is the role of women. Not only is this argumentative in his works, the female character in his life was questionable as well. Shakespeare lived in a day in time where his country was ruled by a woman. Some go as far as to say that Queen Elizabeth told him what to write. Later, when Queen Victoria took the throne, she banned that anything against the female gender be written. Therefore, other critics call Shakespeare a feminist. While there are many accusations against him regarding his view of the female role in society, there is still no doubt that Shakespeare used women to achieve popularity in many ways.
