Babylon is one of the most prominent Akkadian city-states that are widely known today. Babylon first existed as a small town around 3000 BCE but wasn't officially a city-state until 1867 BCE. It was controlled by an Amorite Dynasty which was a dynasty consisted of Mesopotamian people. During this time they surpassed the currently strong city-state of Eridu, which was the oldest Mesopotamian city-state. Originally the Sumerian city of Nippur was known as the "holy" city but as Babylon was established, it became known as the "holy" city. Babylon was also known for its population size, being the first city to have above 200,000 inhabitants. In 1792 BCE, the Amorite king known as Hammurabi took power of the city of Babylon and turned it into an empire, known as Babylonia. The Babylonian Empire of the Ancient time period would have collapsed without the developed written laws of Hammurabi, the centralized government forms of Hammurabi, and the influence of other Empires that conquered Babylon.
