Feeling and living the war could be a horrifying experience for anyone, but for Robert Leckie, author of the book "Helmet for My Pillow," it was something different. Living the war and being away from his country and his loved ones was not easy; he wanted to fight for his nation and his life. The author's attitude toward war was shown through patriotism, a feeling of hopeless and frustration. During the war, Leckie's life changed considerably as he chose to fight for an honorable cause, the world, his country, his people and his loved ones. His mind was always on killing "the japs" or the enemy and defending his nation. Leckie said "It's is one thing to die, another to die uselessly" (passage 1); he preferred to die serving his nation, for it was a sacrifice he was willing to take. He always showed his attitude toward war in a patriotic way. He always had in mind his purpose.
