This comedy portfolio aims to examine how individuals, groups or societies are included and excluded in stand-up comedy acts. The portfolio will also go onto discuss how stand-up comedy attempts to cause offence. Is offence taken due to marginalization or purely because comedians take the jokes too far?
The focus of my comedy portfolio warrants further investigation as the issues with marginalization of individuals, groups or societies within stand-up comedy have aroused in previous work and are still to this date a publicly debated issue which merits academic investigation. A stand-up comedy is a style of comedy where the performer speaks directly to the audience, their aim is to make the audience laugh. In stand-up comedy there are issues of marginalization with ethnicity, disability, race and sexuality. The audience are often offended by some of the jokes that are made by the comedian and as a result feel marginalized. For instance, comedian, Tracy Morgan told his crowd not to "mess with women who have retarded kids.", not only did this offend those with a disability ......
