The word procurator refers to a government agent in Ancient Rome. Procurators were around from the beginning of the reign of Augustus until the 4th century CE, in which the name of the position was changed to rationalis. They mainly dealt with the financial concerns of Ancient Rome. These included the mint, the supply of grain, and the mines. At times, procurators were allowed to govern certain lesser Roman provinces, including Judea. Procurators ruled Judea, which was the province in which Jesus was born. Even if they are unaware of it, every Christian knows the name of one procurator of Judea, Pontius Pilate. If a procurator ruled a province, he had control of both financial and judicial matters. However, if they started causing problems they were subject to the authority of a governor of a major province near them. Obviously, they were ultimately subject to the emperor of Rome.
