Ellis Island Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Before research, I did not know much on Ellis Island. I thought it was just a port in New York where many immigrants came into America from different parts of the world to start a new life. Now, I have a better understanding of how this station ran, why people wanted to come to America, and the risks of the trip. For many people, coming to the New World, they believed, would be the start of a better life. Twelve million people seemed to believe this for 62 years. Some even believed the New World was some kind of Utopia, with streets of gold, where you wouldn't have to work a day in your life. We know now that that was not the case at all, and many people were probably very dissapointed when they arrived here and realized it for themselves. Many people were told that the New World would be a place of freedom, freedom to practice your religion, and freedom to start over in a prosperous country. However, how free were these people?
