Nicole Bade/ week 1 Why Hume and Kant are both ‘right’ Both Hume and Kant have compelling arguments about their definitions of morality. I will attempt to show that while these definitions are certainly contrary, neither argument is necessarily stronger than the other in the context of what the author set out to prove. In formal logic there are two different kinds of proofs. The first, a deductive proof is obtained by showing that a statement directly follows from a set of premises. The second, an inductive proof is obtained by showing that a property is preserved throughout a set. Proof by induction is used to show that the members of a set for which the proof is given have a certain property, whereas deductive proofs are used to show that if one accepts the premises of that proof one must necessarily accept the conclusion of the proof. The fundamental difference between the positions of Hume and Kant are the conclusions they wish to prove, and the form of proof they choose to use.
