Symbolism in the Scarlet Letter Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In The Scarlet Letter, a book written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, there are many levels of symbolism throughout the story. They all surface multiple times, and help the reader to better understand the novel, as well as to give subtle hints and clues about the conclusion of the book. The most prominent of these symbols is the letter ‘A,’ which Hester must always wear. Other symbols include sunlight, a wild rosebush, the Black Man, as well as Roger Chillingworth. Hawthorne describes every scene with extreme detail, and yet encourages further imagination with the addition of symbolism. The scarlet letter is easily the clearest symbol, as the book was based on this letter and that which it represents. The letter represents Hester and her moral decisions, and as Hester changes, so do others’ interpretations of the letter’s meaning. The letter’s primary meaning is ‘A’ for ‘Adulterer,’ and she must wear this badge at all times as a symbol of her sin, and also as her repentance. At first Hester is shunned from and singled out of the community, but as time progresses people begin to take......
