By 1550 England’s economy was in trouble. The population had outstripped the food supply and poverty was rampant. Internal shifts in the economy attributed to the Black Death in the fourteenth century added to the crisis. Trade with other countries had slumped, whilst the population grew in the new towns that were supporting the rising middle classes creating unemployment.
In the middle of the fourteenth century the whole of Europe had succumbed to a pandemic illness, the Black Death. This swept through the continent and within three to four years the population of Europe had been halved. This disrupted the original economy, which was a feudal based economy, where the serfs would work the land of their liege lord in return for low rents on land and houses. However when the Black Death ended England’s population had decreased significantly from around six million in 1300 to about one point five million in the fourteenth century.
