Scott Joplin: A Look at His Prominence on Ragtime� This paper summarizes the life and works of Scott Joplin. His influences not only as a pianist but also as a composer has continued to resonate throughout the years. This paper attempts to illustrate his contribution and the mark he left on the American music world. Scott Joplin was born in Linden, Texas on November 24, 1868. When he was seven years old his family moved to Texarkana. Because his mother worked in white-owned home he had access to a piano, which peeked his interest in playing. When he was still young his family left the farm of which his father �formerly a slave� worked as a laborer. Although Joplin father felt that making music was nothing more that a pastime it was not a way to make money. Joplin believed that music was his way out of poverty. Even at an early age, Joplin demonstrated his extraordinary talent for music. He was already skillful on the banjo, and was beginning to play the piano.
