The main character of The Scarlet Letter, Hester Prynne, wears a scarlet letter "A" as a symbol of adultery, but she refuses to identify the partner in her crime. However, after her conviction of adultery, she managed to raise a daughter, become an important seamstress in her community, and set an example for her close-knit community. She changes three different times throughout the novel, going from being a shamed woman to a capable women and then to a healer. Hester Prynne emerges from the prison, proud and beautiful, wearing an elaborately embroidered scarlet letter �A� on her chest and carrying a three month old baby. While she is standing on the scaffold she becomes aware of the stern faces looking up at her. Hester painfully realizes her present position of shame and punishment. The most obvious subject of punishment that Hester had to cope with is wearing the scarlet letter. "By the point which drew all eyes and, as it were, transfigured the wearer. . . was the scarlet letter, so fantastically embroidered and illuminated upon her bosom" (p. 51-52).
