The Fountainhead Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The Fountainhead Within The Fountainhead novel, Howard Roark illustrates the differences in personalities of an egotist and an altruist through his courtroom speech. The beliefs of the egotist are one who is selfish, and arrogant. However, the classification on an altruist is an unselfish concern for the welfare of others, and they make charitable donations meant to increase human prosperity similar to a philanthropist. Throughout The Fountainhead, Howard Roark talks about his thesis in relation to the two personalities. Howard Roark exercises several examples to explain the differences of the personalities. For example, Roark uses an illustration of how man first learns of fire, and the other men consider him an evildoer who deals with an evil spirit. In addition, he utilizes an analogy about how people do not have collective brains, they make compromises. Roark quotes “The basic need of the creator is independence” (Page 712). “The basic need of the second-hander is to secure his ties with men in order to be fed” (Page 712).
