The Strain Theory argues that people who commit crimes, have basically the same values as everyone else, among these values is an emphasis on achievement and success. According to this theory, the opportunities for the achievement of success are greatly restricted for people in the lower class. Because of the unfair restrictions placed on the lower class, by the structure of the society they live in; they have to make a choice, either they abandon the major American values of success and prosperity and live the only way they can; or they abandon that same American societies rules and find any way they can to achieve the values of success and prosperity in what ever way they can even if that means abandoning obedience of the law. Basically people find illegitimate ways of achieving success when their legitimate opportunities are blocked.
