The tribulations and struggles of engineers, scientists, innovators, and enthusiasts during the generation leading up to the first heavier-than-air craft, cannot be given credit to only two people. Orville and Wilbur Wright sustained the first controlled flight on December 17th, 1903, when the two brothers took their craft 120 feet in 12 seconds. The Wright brothers claim victory for the first successful flight, but it is important to understand how considerable their debt was to English and German innovators of the nineteenth century. As early as 1804 Sir George Cayley identified the basic design of what we recognize as a conventional aircraft. Francis Herbert Wenham created the wind tunnel in 1871 making it possible to test air flow with sub-designs, or individual parts of a craft. Similarly, Otto Lilienthal created gliders which supplied the powerful incentive of a successful example. These philosophers in aerodynamics are not recognized for their immense vocation in the race for air-travel.
