As truly an all-American genre of music, jazz was created as a symbol of unity for African Americans and soon became popular among all races, ages, and genders. Pioneered by African Americans between the late nineteenth and the early twentieth centuries, jazz, once very popular, continued its life by influencing rock and roll music. African Americans created jazz music under the influence of elements from West African music, the closest ancestral link to jazz.
