Louis Armstrong once sang, “I hear babies crying, I watch them grow/ They’ll learn much more than I’ll never know/ And I think to myself what a wonderful world….” The irony of those lyrics is that Louis Armstrong would never live to see the enormous impact that he and his jazz colleagues had on the musical world. As truly an all-American genre of music, jazz was created as a symbol of unity for African Americans and soon became popular among all races, ages, and genders. Pioneered by African Americans between the late nineteenth and the early twentieth centuries, jazz, once very popular, continued its life by influencing rock and roll music. African Americans created jazz music under the influence of elements from West African music, the closest ancestral link to jazz. Before Africans came to the United States during the slave trade, West African instrumental music was part of the native African culture. West African music used a three against two beat rhythm, a rhythm in which one section would play a three beat measure while another played a two beat measure, which was used in ......
