Grouping Ability Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

During the past decade, ability grouping has been a topic of increasing debate among educators. Are the traditional systems which made tracking and ability grouping so important within our educational system standing up to scrutiny as we enter the 21st century? There are many reasons against ability grouping but the best solutions satisfy both sides of the issue. Student achievement, social development and democratic values can be respected, and individual differences recognized, without affecting student success and self-concept. Advocates of ability grouping have strong arguments for the system. First ability grouping is not the same thing as tracking. In Susan Black’s article, “On the Wrong Track,” ability grouping presumes to help students reach similar goals, though not at the same level of achievement. Tracking puts students into wholly different curricular paths with different goals. Teachers assume that high groups are more capable and therefore challenge them.
