The Effect of Conscription on English-French Relations in Canada At the beginning of World War I the British Empire requested the support of its colonies to join them in war to defeat the dreaded enemy. Many Canadians, wishing to express their loyalty to the crown, quickly embraced and proudly acknowledged joining Britain in the Great War. They did this by a massive display of patriotic volunteering in the first two years of the war, the majority of volunteers being English-Canadians. In 1917 after a great push to try and convince the French-Canadian population to enlist in the war, Prime Minister Robert Borden’s government passed the first Conscription law forcing young Canadians to help support the war effort and provide replacements for the heavy casualties overseas. This sparked protest and riots in the French communities and controversy within the Canadian government. The Canadian government and the Anglophone society made their French counterparts feel separated from the rest of the country creating animosity between the two ethnic groups.
