Pride vs. Guilt Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Pride and guilt - two words that generally don’t describe the same person. However, authors will occasionally use these two characteristics to further explain the characters in the ensuing story. A perfect example of this is Edgar Allan Poe’s brilliant narrative “The Tell-Tale Heart.” The narrator is portrayed throughout the story as a man full of both pride and guilt due to the actions that he has committed. Poe focuses heavily on describing the events which lead the narrator to be filled with pride, and arguably insane with guilt. Pride is defined as an elation over an act or possession or haughty behavior, and the narrator in Poe’s short story “The Tell-Tale Heart” is obviously full of it. Through his scrutinizing planning and what had seemed to be perfect execution of his plan, the narrator becomes almost infatuated with his work. When describing his triumph, the narrator states: Now this is the point. You fancy me mad. Madmen know nothing. But you should have seen me. You should have seen how wisely I proceeded - with what caution - with what foresight - wit......
