Obesity is a problem that America started to experience between 1890 and 1910. Dieting was put as a top priority not only for women, but men as well. It is hard to understand where this manifestation to become thin has been derived from, but has been known to have been in our culture for over a century. �Failure to live up to the new, standardized body image entails at least an appalling ugliness, at most a fundamentally flawed character� (Stearns vii). Emotionally everyone wants to fit in to our society. Being thin gives people self confidence, and a type of sex appeal that everyone is dying to have. It is thought that being thin will help others be successful in society. While in some cultures being fat is considered to be beautiful, in the United States it is not. Obesity is an ongoing disease that Americans have been fighting for years, and the emotional rollercoaster that our society has been thrown on has a variety of twists and turns.
