Industrial Hygiene Industrial hygiene is a profession that studies, addresses and works toward the prevention of environmental stressors in the workplace. These stressors include any factors that cause or can cause discomfort, which may result in lost time from work. There are countless environmental stressors including gasses, fumes, vapors, dusts, and noise, flash from welding activities, vapors and mists. Of course some work environments will have a higher level of these stressors present depending on the type of work being performed. The American Academy of Industrial Hygiene has developed a Code of Ethics that includes many responsibilities for industrial hygienists. Some of those responsibilities are to ensure the health of employees, to maintain an objective approach in recognizing, assessing, controlling, and preventing health hazards regardless of outside pressure and influence.
