Barbara Brodowska Classic Interior- The Houses of Parliament Introduction The fire broke out on the evening of the 16th of October 1834 caused by the burning of a large quantity of elm sticks in a furnace beneath the Lords’ Chamber, in the space of only a few hours the whole building was ablaze. The fire burned on throughout the night whilst thousands of spectators from all around watched in amazement, Augustus Welby Pugin being one of those in the crowd, he was not alone in his satisfaction of seeing the building burn to the ground. “Certainly the grandest thing we have ever witnessed.” Journalists recounted the development of the fire as if it were a spectacular event and artists such as JMW Turner captured the scene on canvas in amazing atmospheric paintings. By the following day the fire had already taken with it most of that which stood in its path only the Great hall, the Law courts to the west and the Cloister of St Stephen remained.
