Walls can be constructed for various reasons. They can be used to conceal something, to enclose a property, to protect an area or used for defensive purposes, to divide an area, or used as a means to block something out. They prevent the union of two things and by putting up a wall, a barrier is formed that isolates one thing from another. Robert Frost’s “Mending Wall” and T. S. Eliot’s “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” each present a monologue describing their own emotions of a wall unique to each narrator and the struggles they face while examining the reasons for their wall. Frost’s speaker questions “What I was walling in or walling out” (l. 34) and addresses the existence of the physical wall with his neighbor. Eliot’s speaker, however, struggles with an emotional wall of opening up to other people, especially to women. For him, “It is impossible to say just what I mean!” (l. 105). Through a comparison of the lifestyle, nature of the “wall”, and the overall structure of both poems, it is apparent that both “Mending Wall” and “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” face ......
