In the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald the central theme is the decay of the American Dream. By breaking down the 1920�s high society, Fitzgerald reveals that the American Dream has transformed from a pure ideal of security into a twisted scheme of materialistic power. Fitzgerald highlights the original aspects as well as the new aspects of the American Dream in his tragic story to illustrate that a once impervious dream is now lost forever to the American people. For Fitzgerald, the true American Dream is characterized by perseverance and hope. With these, one can succeed against all odds.
