Environmental Science 4-17-04 Air Pollution Laws Clean Air, like many natural occurring factors beneficial to life, is taken for granted by the majority of citizens around the globe. In America, there is talk in the offices of government agencies whether the laws concerning our clean air should be strengthened or weakened. On one side of the issue we have the health and well being of the citizens. Polluted air causes over 30,000 deaths and 20,000 hospitalizations every year; yet our president has decided it to be more important to lower the restrictions on clean air in some places around the US, such as California, to boost the level of energy being produced due to the abundance of blackouts in the state as of late. So who is at risk here? Adults with asthma, newborns nervous systems can be damaged by mercury, plants and crops suffer, fish are becoming toxic, and the forests are becoming weaker to natural disasters such as storms and fires.
