Cloning Cloning has become a fast developing, yet very controversial procedure. Cloning has been defined as the production of one or more individual plants or animals that are genetically identical to another plant or animal. The three different types of cloning include embryo cloning, reproductive cloning, and therapeutic cloning. A clone is not an exact replica of the original, but a much younger identical twin. Embryo cloning simulates the mechanism by which twins naturally develop. The procedure splits a single fertilized ovum into two or more clones. The embryos are then implanted into the womb of a receptive female. Embryo cloning begins with a standard in vitro fertilization procedure. A chemical is added after the fertilized egg has developed to remove the �zona pellucida� covering. This provides nutrients to the cells to promote cell division.
