Stephanie Rosenbaum English-1302 2/26/05 Civil Rights Movement Rights, equality, and justice, are all words that come to mind when you think of present day America. The liberty to create a wonderful life is the United States. Where opportunity is abundant and where everyone has his or her own freedom, a freedom from oppression and a freedom to achieve anything. However, the reality is that not everyone had his or her own freedom, this great nation was once deeply under the influence of racial segregation in the 1950�s and 1960�s, and freedom was a word that only applied when you were of a certain race. When I began researching this conflict of civil disobedience, I was perplexed at how our society could be flooded with a racist power, and a hurting society covered in oppression. Power and oppression resulted in the black people being oppressed and the white people being the oppressors. Racial segregation and discrimination effected lives everywhere in the United States.
