There comes a point in our lives when we seek to escape our environment or surroundings. The theme of Midaq Alley cuts to the heart of Arab society. Namely, it shows how a group of characters living in the same slum neighborhood responds to the combined promise and threat of Western-influenced modernization. During the time of the British occupation in Egypt, conditions of the Egyptians took a spiraling downturn. Naguib Mahfouz illustrated this with many of characters in Midaq Alley. With animated and dynamic individuals such as Hamida, Abbas Hilu, Kirsha, and Mrs. Kirsha, Mahfouz illustrates a story of survival and change among the individual characters, mostly in regard to Hamida and Abbas Hilu. The British�s role in the book, is that of the corruptor of Egyptian society and he believed that the occupation was completely harmful for Egyptian culture and its humanity. With the occupation of the British during WWII, Egyptian society was affected. The local barber, Abbas, is a twenty-something character who seeks to advance in society but not necessarily move out of the alle......
