The purpose of the study is to identify the peak pressures in the lung during manual ventilation. Manual ventilation is used mostly in the ICU during CPR and during transports. This makes the chances of barotrauma greater. Their hypothesis was that respiratory therapists sometimes deliver very high peak pressures when they manually ventilate a patient. In some cases this might help if we recruit alveoli in a patient that has collapsed lungs there wise can be very harmful. The study took experienced respiratory therapists to manually ventilate a lung model while they monitored peak airway pressures, tidal volumes and respiratory frequency. This was the first time this study was done and has valid results after. This study used experienced respiratory therapists with eight to thirty-five years experience at Fletcher Allen Health care in Vermont to manually ventilate a model test lung (model 1601 Michigan instruments).
