Have you ever heard of anyone being high on cocaine, or better known to some as crack? Most likely you know someone who either has used cocaine in the past or is currently using it. For instance, it became public knowledge during the past elections that our President, George Bush, was a user in his younger years. The “champagne” drug, as it is commonly called, is one of the worst drugs on the market and is used by over 1.7 million Americans today. Most users are between the ages of eighteen and twenty-five (Nida.gov(2003)).
As early as 3,000 B.C. cocaine was being used. In these early days, the Indians living in Peru and other South American countries chewed the leaves of coca plants. This practice was related to religious rituals and was commonly accepted for thousands of years. In 1862, for the first time a purified, freebase, form of cocaine was removed from the crystalline substance found in coca leaves.
