Deviance and Social Control
Normal behavior by people is defined as conforming to a standard that has been set by society; expected, usual or typical behavior. Deviant behavior is the failure to conform to the standards set by society; failure to follow rules, committing crimes, as examples. The definition of deviant behavior is changing all the time. As social standards change, what is considered deviant behavior changes. Also, different cultures affect the decision as to whether behavior is deviant or not.
Body tattooing is a good example to use to show how deviant behavior changes. During World War II and the Vietnam War many soldiers and sailors tattooed their bodies, many with numerous tattoos. This was socially acceptable at that time. In later years, tattoos became a thing that was done almost exclusively by men that were or had been in prison and men that rode Harley Davidson motorcycles and belonged to motorcycle gangs.
