Overview
The digestive system is the part of food that breaks down the food we eat and absorbs its nutrients into the blood stream. In a way, it’s one big factory where every organ does its job. “Food provides us with fuel to live, energy to work and play, and the raw materials to build new cells.” After food is chewed from the mouth, it is swallowed. It then goes down the esophagus to the stomach. In there, stomach acids break it down. It goes into the small then large intestines then out of the body.
It all starts in the mouth when you chew your food. This is when your saliva helps make your food all mushy so it can be swallowed. When it is swallowed, it then goes down the esophagus, which is ten inches long. But also at the back of your throat is your windpipe, which allows air to come in and out of your body. When you swallow a small ball of mashed-up food or liquids, a special flap called the epiglottis flops down over the opening of your windpipe to make sure the food enters the esophagus and not the windpipe.
