“A Rose for Emily” is set in the southern town of Jefferson sometime in the beginning of the twentieth century. The present laws and norms differ from those known to the town’s older citizens including Miss Emily. One of the major themes in Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily” is the decline of the Old South after the Civil War. There are many aspects of the short story that serve to highlight this difference like the decline of chivalry and oral agreements, the town’s physical appearance, the reaction to Homer Baron, and more. Before the Civil War, Southern society was composed of landed gentry, merchants, tenant farmers, and slaves. The aristocratic men of this period had an unspoken code of chivalry, and women were the innocent, pure guardians of morality. For example, Colonel Sartoris’s concocts an elaborate story to spare Emily’s feelings when he remits her taxes; the narrator states, “Only a man of Colonel Sartoris’s generation and thought could have invented (the story), and only a woman could have believed it.” He did this as a means of sparing Miss Emily the embarrassment of not b......
