In the late 1970s’ and 1980s’ many Vietnamese immigrants immigrated to California as a mean of escaping the communist regime as well as finding the best opportunities for their family. Vietnamese immigrants, who immigrated to California in the late 1970s, are often known as “the first wave.” The second wave is Vietnamese-Chinese immigrants who were citizens of Vietnam and have immigrated to America in the late 1980s. Due to the lack of education, occupation, and exposure to western culture, the second wave did not adapt as successfully as the first wave. Therefore, causing the second wave to experienced numerous cultural conflicts in America such as, community isolation, family roles, and child raising.
First, family roles increased tensions in the household are being experienced as second wave immigrants attempt to change traditional roles throughout the family.
