Locke and Hobbes Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Locke and Hobbes Writing in the 17th century, both Hobbes and Locke used the concept of a state of nature to show the nature of man's existence before the establishment of society and a sovereign. Both writers then proceeded from this theoretical base point to construct a theory of how civil society came into being, what form it took and the consequences of it. Hobbes and Locke have a defined opinion on the way man was meant to be and how they would naturally begin a governing system to keep people in order because they both say in so many words that mankind is one from nature. In chapter two of Locke’s Second Treaty he begins “To understand political power right, and derive it from its original, we must consider, what state all men are naturally in, and that is, a state of perfect freedom to order their actions, and dispose of their possessions and persons, as they think fit, within the bounds of the law of nature, without asking leave, or depending upon the will of any other man.
