The maps that Europeans were used to seeing did not show any continent other than Europe, Asia and Africa. To the Europeans these were the only continents that existed. They depicted the three continents as a big blob of earth with bodies of water cutting into it. The Europeans knew little about the lands of North Africa and the Middle East, all the rest they knew came from stories, legends and guessing on their behalf. Europe was the center of the world for them. Europeans at this time, were greatly interested in gold, silver, spices, anything of value to bring prosper and wealth to their countries. So, when Christopher Columbus set sail from Spain in 1492 he wasn�t looking for a new land but a route to the Indies where rumors said it was filled with gold and spices to bring prosperity to Spain, who had sponsored Columbus� journeys.
