When I lived in Russia, I remember the study of Judaism was still a punishable offense. Before the fall of Communism, and the new freedoms it brought I did not even know that Judaism existed. Only later when my mother and I migrated to America my mom opened my eyes by telling me that I was Jewish. At that point I formed both religious and national new identity. My father�s religion is Christianity and my mother�s is Jewish. That makes me half Jewish and half Christian, but according to Judaism religion is dictated by one�s mother. This means that I am Jewish, but I didn�t discover it until my mom and I moved to a free country. From the day my parents decided to baptize me, I thought of myself as a good Christian who went to church and practiced my religion daily. My parents chose Christianity as my religion because of all the struggles Jews had went through in the country I grew up in.
