Most of us have a normal way of using language that is an intersection of such dialects and that marks us as being, for example, a middle-aged, white, cultured, female of old family or a young, urban, working-class, male Hispanic from New York City. Several Early nineteenth century authors, including Charles Chestnutt, Zora Neale Hurston, and Richard Wright, use southern dialect to demonstrate a venacular culture in the dialog of their characters and in order to establish social status and regional realism in their stories. In “The Gilded Six-bits” Zora Hurston uses southern dialect to demonstrate the regional realism of the times in the following excerpt: “Offen a stray nigger dat come through Eatonville. He had it on his watch chain for a charm- goin’ round making out iss gold money…Ah hauld off and knocked ‘im down and took his old four-bits way from ‘im. Gointer buy my wife some good ole lassas kis......
