The child-care vs. home-care debate is a controversial one in America. The question is whether these careers outside the home are harmful for their children. Is this hard-won women's right to work, actually good for their offspring? In the old days, perhaps until the early 1970s, mothers handled priorities rather differently. Was emphasis to be placed on the pursuit of the emotional and intellectual needs of the mother, or those of the children? Since it was assumed that both could not be done together, the mother almost always stayed at home to look after her children. This was not seen as a sacrifice by the mother, or even as the exercise of a choice, as the social norms of the time did not recognize the privilege to work. Today, the same question is driven with its complexities. Women are deemed, now, to have a choice. A mother can have a child and go (or return) to work while it is an infant.
