Family is crucial to one�s life; something to fall back on in times of need. The stories, �For Esme-With Love and Squalor� and �Goodbye, My Brother�, share a common theme of family. Family is what ultimately changes the characters� lives. However, these two stories have many differences regarding their family and how they go about living their daily lives. In these two short stories, the authors make it a point to the reader to show how important family members are in dealing with certain issues. In both stories the issue of family comes up quite frequently. In �For Esme-With Love and Squalor�, Esme and Charles father and mother died, however their previous guidance before their deaths allowed the children to feel a sense of ambition and be able to move forward with their lives. Esme even takes on a motherly role in taking care of her brother even though their aunt is supposed to be taking care of them.
