Setting and Atmosphere in �The Cask of Amontillado� In Poe�s �The Cask of Amontillado�, both setting and atmosphere play a very important role not only in giving Montresor an ideal ironic situation in which to commit his dark deeds, but also in giving the story an eerie mood which keeps the reader on edge and unnerved. From the �supreme madness� (180) of the streets during the carnival season, to the �damp ground of the catacombs� (181) the narrator, an unnamed Montresor, coaxes Fortunato, a fellow upper-classman, down into the crypt with the promise of Amontillado and exacts his revenge upon his unfortunate offender. Poe takes this typical horror theme and greatly heightens it with an unusual situation in which the distractions of the carnival season make an excellent distraction for Montresor to attack Fortunato.
