For as long as I can remember, people have always searched for a way to escape. Escaping from one's reality is a form of relief and serenity. The theme of escape is best reflected in The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams. Each character in this story uses escapism in their own, unique way. Escapism in this story is roughly used on a daily basis, which can create dysfunction and a chaotic lifestyle. In this story, Tom escapes by poetry, drinking, smoking and going to the movies. Amanda escapes by nostalgia. Finally, Laura escapes by cherishing and admiring her glass figurines. All three characters use these methods to escape from the reality that is their life. First of all, Tom is a significant character in the story, truly, he is the breadwinner of the family and when one is relied on as much as Tom, surely, one may start to feel burdened. Not suprisingly, Tom has the secret lifestyle that he does. It is his escaping. For instance, "I'm going to the movies" (3.36.1920).
