�Lover�s� by Brian Friel is a play which highlights the social conditions of Roman Catholic society in Ireland in the 1960�s, showing the contrast in the attitudes between the younger and older generation as the begins to change. The play consists of two short plays; �Winners�� and �Losers.�� Both of which demonstrate the atmosphere in the small society and how the members of the society are incapable of escaping their watchful eye .In �Losers�� the character of Cissy who is made out to be the nosy neighbour of Hannah and Andy, is used to illustrate this. She constantly interrupts the Hannah and Andy by coming round to visit Hannah�s sick mother, Mrs Wilson. This highlights how little privacy the couple have and although they are grown adults, they are made to feel like naughty children by the older members of society. The imbalance of wealth is another aspect of society that is shown in the play.
