Ford’s Effect on America Henry Ford, the father of the ‘every-man’s’ automobile, was not the first to invent the automobile. The inventor of the first gasoline-powered automobile, a three-wheel motor buggy, was John Lambert. There were, in fact, several different types before Ford’s great Model T came along. At first, the automobile was a plaything for the rich at the beginning of the 20th century. Instead of being greedy and pocketing all the profits made, Ford lowered the price of his car from $825 to $575. By producing an automobile affordable to the average American, Ford had paved the way to a more industrial way of life. He changed the automobile from a luxury to a necessity. As a young boy, Ford had a knack for inventing machines that would help his father complete hard farm chores. After he was older and married, he began to work on his dream; to make his own working automobile. At night and during the weekends, Ford could be found in his shed working on his car.
