Status of race relations at the end of the reconstruction was the direct consequence of the policies of Johnson and Congress during this period. Evaluate this statement based on: Mississippi: The past that has not died, By Walter Lord; and, The Era of Reconstruction 1865-1877, By Kenneth M. Stampp
Johnson was said to be a bad politician, he was a southern democrat, in a cabinet full of Republicans. He was said to not have had the skills to work the governmental system the way Lincoln could, Johnson, unwilling to go back on his word to the congressmen before their break in 1865, declared the reconstruction over even though it wasn’t. And in order for everything to be in place when the congressmen returned in the fall, Johnson started issuing pardons, which started the whole downfall of the race relations as well as the Andrew Johnson Presidential Term. After Lincoln's death, President Johnson continued to reconstruct the former Confederate States while Congress was on a break in 1865.
