Interracial Communication
Growing up in India, I never came in contact with people of different races and ethnicities. Then my parents and I moved to the United States. All of sudden, at the age of thirteen, I went from being the majority to being a minority. Coming to the United States was a huge cultural shock, but the hardest part was the language barrier. I did not speak or understand English. In middle school, I had a difficult time with interpersonal communication due to language, not race. My classmates were used to interacting with other Indian students before I enrolled there, which made my interracial communication with them lot easier.
At first, I was not aware of any stereotypes associated with blacks or whites. I was told to use the ‘n’ word on certain instances by both black and white students because they thought it was more humorous than being racist. As my understanding of the language and culture grew, it became easier for me to communicate with people of different races.
